BERGEPANZER III - 1944

Description

Due to the efficiency of the Bergepanther and other armored recovery vehicles, the German High Command decided in January 1944 to convert all the old Panzer III back to the factory. Indeed, were completely obsolete and no longer has a place as a battle tank on the battlefield, but its robust and versatile chassis can still be used, especially in a difficult military context. From March 1944 until March 1945, 167 Panzer III (model J, L, M and N), as well as the little successful Flammpanzer III, were transformed into Bergepanzer III. In the factory, the turret was removed, and replaced by an open square superstructure, wooden plates (for reasons of saving steel), housing spare parts and tools of the two onboard mechanics.
