Description :

The Merkava is the main battle tank used by the Israel Defense Forces. The tank began development in 1973 and entered active service in 1978. At present, the Merkava tank has developed four models. It was first used extensively during the 1982 Lebanon War. The name "Merkava" comes from the initial development plan name of the Wehrmacht, Hebrew for "chariot".

The Merkava is a combat vehicle designed for combat damage, survivability, cost-effectiveness and off-road performance and quick field repairs. The turret is closer to the rear of the hull than most MBTs are designed, and the front-mounted engine configuration gives extra protection against frontal attacks. This arrangement also created the world's largest tank design.
