Description

In 1936, RLM issued requirements for artillery fire liaison and spotter aircraft for the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe. This aircraft must have short takeoff and landing (STOL) performance. The Fi-156 entered small-scale serial production in 1937. When in flight, the landing gear hung down. This gives the plane the appearance of a very long-legged bird with large wings. The Fi156 received a nickname - Storch (Crane).

The Storch was widely used by the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe as a senior officer and general air taxi, reconnaissance aircraft and air ambulance. The Storch was produced in different versions, version A, C and D. The highly successful Storch was exported to German allies - Croatia, Finland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania and Italy. After World War II, the Storch continued in front line service in various countries.
