The genesis of the Jaguar 1 vehicle dates back to the early 1960s, when Hanomag and Henschel created the Raketenjagdpanzer 2 destroyer - the first mass-produced tank destroyer with missile weapons in the history of the Bundeswehr. In this case, it was the SS-11 ATGM missile. This vehicle proved to be a successful design, but in the 1970s and early 1980s, there was rapid development of guided anti-tank missiles in many NATO countries, leading to the creation of missiles such as TOW and HOT Milan. Bundeswehr decision-makers therefore decided to modernize some of the used Raketenjagdpanzer 2 vehicles by replacing the SS.11 missiles with HOT Milan and strengthening the vehicle's armor, particularly at the front. This is how the Raketenjagdpanzer Jaguar 1 was born.
