Description

In 1942, a variant of the StuG III was designed with a 105 mm howitzer in place of the StuK 40 L/43. These vehicles, designated as Sturmhaubitze 42 (or StuH 42), also listed as Sd.Kfz 142/2), were intended to provide infantry support due to the increasing number of StuG III F/8s used in a tank destroyer role. The StuH was equipped with a variant of the light field howitzer model 1918, modified to benefit from electric firing and fitted with a muzzle brake. Late models were built using StuG III G chassis as well as StuG III F and F/8 chassis. The muzzle brake was often ignored due to its most doubtful usefulness as the gun had a low muzzle velocity.
